Construction & Facilities Safety

Occupational Health & Safety and the Division of Facilities Management provide a large variety of construction and renovation services to the campus community. Large and unique projects are contracted out to qualified bidders. The performance of any construction/renovation work activity is conducted in compliance with the Ontario Ministry of Labour and the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations. In addition, Facilities Management policies and work procedures are also adhered to ensure the safety of all workers and occupants.

For resolution of construction Health & Safety issues, contact Facilities Management at extension 83304 and explain the situation. The Service Centre will notify the Project Coordinator assigned to the specific project.

Before actual renovation and construction begins, some projects require the removal of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM). The University ensures that all handling of ACM is performed as required by the Western Asbestos Control Policy. In addition, the Asbestos Project Information Handout outlines the sequence of events and communication which should take place during all Type 3 asbestos abatement projects.  Western also has an Asbestos Control Program.
