Recognition and Reward

Successful organizations recognize employees for their outstanding efforts and accomplishments. They can show their appreciation in a number of different ways. This is a video created by Ottawa Public Health and the Mental Health Commission of Canada, and adapted with permission from Mindful Employer Canada. (time - 3:36)

What can I do as an employee?

  • Be aware of the criteria for different forms of recognition or awards
  • Send a personal thank-you card or email to colleagues who have assisted with projects (try our Make Kindness Counts "Ways to Give Thanks")
  • Give your colleagues a "shout-out" at the next team meeting
  • Start a peer recognition or gratitude board that can be displayed in common areas

What can I do as a manager or supervisor?

  • Develop a criteria to help employees understand how they can be recognized
  • Ask the employee how they would like to be recognized
    • Positive written/verbal feedback
    • Special recognition within the department or organization
    • Public recognition
    • Awards (certificates, plaque, gifts) - you can read more about research and resources on recognition on the Make Kindness Count website
    • Team get-togethers
  • Recognize the process as well as the results
  • Encourage peer-to-peer recognition

Acknowledging people in a fair and timely way can go a long way in boosting morale and confidence.
